An elderly man walks out of the Back Woods where he has spent over sixty years since his young mother and a group of world-weary neighbors in the hollow followed the charismatic Preacher Man into 'the untouched wilderness' to 'live pure'. Since he is now the last member left alive, he returns to the Outer World with courage, honor, and a different way of looking at things as his only living relative discovers as she attempts to put her life back together after a ruinous divorce while attempting to help something else that used to live in the deep woods in abundance...the red Puma. Only to discover the truth of an ancient Chinese proverb - 'The hands that gives the gift of a rose retains some of the fragrance of the flower in its best bloom! '

I was deeply move by the plight of real life people 'aging out' of the foster care system with less tools than a felon is offered! But the story hit home in such an unexpected way I couldn't bear to explore too deep, but it was too important to scrape! I'd just discovered I COULD write these short-shorts so I challenged myself!

With the passing of ninety-seven year old lawman, Paul Lee McWhorter, the life at the ranch he built above the deserts at Lake Lohotan, to preseve the site sacred to the People for thousands of years, remained unchanged - outwardly - as it passed to the next generation, but the world of 1917 has a little in common the life he lived in the years of social change and upheaval after the American Civil War as his Miwuk granddaughter's life has in common with her beloved grandmother Speckled Bird, the mother of Paul's McWhorter's only child, Spring Rayne.

Now the question becomes, how do you ask her casually what she remembers about what they did while they were alive, when she is deeply enmeshed in grieving for them because they're gone? How much or how little did what caused them to be killed get revealed in front of their daughter during their relationship as a family while they were off-duty? A Brother John Carbasian Mystery ~  A potenially damaging,  missing piece of evidence linked to the 1967 "Blue Smiler Murders" shows up in the possession of a homeless Viet Nam Vet who's suicide within hours of the discovery appears to be linked to the investigation - although another man has already died in an insane asylum charged for the murders of would-be hippies who smiled themselves to dead. In an inebriated state, he makes a remark that mightbe construed as implicating Al Hoag's then teen-aged son, the nephew of the man accused of the original murders.  Brother John already has good reason to mistrust Matthew Allen Lovich - as does his new little wife Gabby - but will Life allow him to 'leave well enough alone' and simply hope for the best? When did it ever?

A novel of faith and action in Post Civil War America. Dtermined to make a newlife for himself- and the people who served his family so faithfully, ninteen year old "Reckless" Walker left  his family home to the carpetbaggers who 'caimed' it.  Digging up the treasured family silver, and offering a new life to anyone, regardless of color, who wanted to take what was rightfully theirs and leave with him to go West. But he is stricken down shortly after their arrival and the price of keeping the Community and 'Redless'' dream alive falls ont he shoulders of a quiet spoke Black woman of middle to indeterminate age, Fanny Walker.  Guessing at the real reason behind the yound soldier's change of cheart she will nopt let his dream die too as long as their is breath in her amble body!
