February

1998

I can’t help but wonder if Shakespeare conceived the idea for “Hamlet”
after hearing a tom cat’s lonely serenade?
To Be or not to be?
Is a question we’d only ask
if we’d been kept awake all night!

1.

 Holiday gift wrapping

stray tinsel in the corner

afternoon’s delight against winter’s calm

put to good use.

-

2.

 Soulful eyes watching me

deep thoughts escape my power

to identity, yet they run through me

leaving me wise.

-

3.

Playful spirits arching high

sheathed claws that do no damage

yet the spirit of the Tiger stalks there

softened by love.

-

4.

A tentative meow

twisted around my ankles

a plaintive attempt to communicate

despite my lacks.

-

5.

Yellow eyes, looking past

pretending not to hear me,

I am to be ignored by royalty

its my station.

-

6.

Higher than the tiger’s

yet smaller than the lion’s

civilized Panther leaves his paw prints here

upon my heart.

-

7.

Worlds final’s autos

raced across flat screen t.v.

holds rapt the city tiger’s attention

tensed with raced blood.

-

8.

The new kid on the block,

yellow fur braced against white

they bat at one another’s faces in bluff

holding their place

-

9.

Cool as moonlit shadows

fluid as a mountain stream,

movements as steady as the snowflakes fall,

piled up outside.

-

10.

The window pane rattles

startling the cats awake,

poised between flight and the need to attack,

a soul laid bare.

-

11.

Snow drifts, the cat yawns awake

a slash of pink midst snow white

the fur pressed against the snow defined pane

mimics itself.

-

12.

Memories of a cat.

Echoes, taunt at my silence,

haunts,  I see from the corner of my eye,

a friend named Max.

-

13.

The fish swims midst fake ferns

keeping Cisco’s attention

taunt with suppressed mischief, while his tail

keeps its timed beat

-

14.

February’s cold stare

mocked by mobile paper wads,

a noble mien briefly abandoned

by playful paws.

-

15.

The soft hiss of steam heat

The silence of the season

Loudly broken by the contented purr

under my chair.

16.

A moist pink nose shows bright

healthy kitten interests

tears the strained fabric of boredom’s silence

but I don’t mind.

-

17.

A thousand nooks explored

a hundred different stems

silhouetted against bedspread flowers

a hint of Spring!

-

18.

Grumbling acceptance

“Little Boy” now the “Old Man”

Turk bravely bears the burden of Cisco

youthful demands.

   -

19.

They pass one another

and almost forget to hiss

one life can not replace another yet

eases the loss.

-

20.

Voices from the hallway

throws Tas’himi to her paws-

throws a snowball of fur across the floor-

from off her feet

-

21.

The calendar ages

more graceful than I may

I see a kitten’s lankiness give way

to tom cat’s grace.

-

22.

 Nothing really changes

last days of February

while my heart makes room for both of my boys

my lap does not!

-

23.

 Hearts set aflutter now

Valentine’s month arrived

the bare trees outside can no longer hide

warm promises.

-

24.

A hunger for action

an envy I can not hide

the joyful activity of my cats

I’m locked inside!

-

25.

 Recycled dreams nurtured

in the hold of Winter’s grasp

the smile my entwined cats have brought to me,

slays winter’s cold

-

26.

Sighs escape happily

a new smile touches my lips

yellow and white stretched side-by-side asleep

no room for three!

-

27.

New house, new horizons

graced a return to old haunts

a family rediscovers Cisco

but to my loss!

-

28.

A pitiful meow

coming from the ceiling warns

that empty cat space will soon be replaced

abandoned cat!

-

29.

I smile as noses touch

though a year separates them

old friendships are renewed between the toms

a dark shape waits.
