Kimmy Stevens, the twelve-year-old daughter of Marine Biologist Dr. Jillian Stevens has Spent her entire life on the decks of the Marine Research vessel, ‘The Marie Sao Ault’, growing up happily under the eyes of her widowed mother and ship’s captain William Harcastle but three years ago while in a dentist’s office in Norway, Jillian Stevens picked up the only English language magazine available in the waiting room and chanced upon an article by an amateur naturalist which told of a curious island in the midst of the san Juan Orca Islands of Northeastern Washington State, and an Indian legend which explained away the mysterious disappearance of the entire adult population of the fragile Spiny Urchin population once every fifteen years, called locally ‘The Moon Without Death” because of a pinkish, organic gel which floated on the water and the lagoon sands of the sheltered fresh water lagoon. She wrote to inform the man kindly that there was no such creature as a fresh water Urchin-to which he invited her to come stay on his island and see the unique species for herself, and now, three summers later she plans to marry him-simply to gain the right of access to the newly discovered species.  Overlooking the threat to the wives of the Anglos who took over both Islands from the native population while doing them the favor of moving them into the Twenty First Century-at gun point.

Ninety-six year old Benjamin ‘Tall Fire” Logan no longer believes in the ‘curse’ he placed against the white invaders when he was only thirteen, having witnessed his mother and baby sister’s tragic falls to their deaths in a vain attempt to save her younger sister who fell from the top of Mount Topaz the Greater—but the deaths  keep happening on a picturesque and otherwise safe beach on the day after the mass migration-this will be his last chance to discover the true cause-or Kimmy’s mother will be it’s next victim
